The Sandman was an industry redefining graphic novel series, created in 89 it ran through the 90s -era of grunge, cybersex and Jay and Silent Bob.

It features a story line critics once referred to as merely ’ambitious’, but have in time hailed Gaiman as a...

"representative of a new order of creators. Cosmopolitan and nomadic, they successfully maintain their creative autonomy while demanding the respect of their chosen publishers through a clear sense of who they are, what they are worth, and a canny blend of independence and diplomacy." (Bookrags)

Gaiman and McKean deliver intricately woven stories -concerning the endless- which on their release took turns at knocking the likes of Batman and Superman of the DC comics (its parent company) shelves. To date it is the only comic publication to win the World Fantasy Award .

The Endless you ask . Destiny , Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Delirium who was once Delight, and Destruction. The initial plot is introduced in ’Preludes and Nocturnes’ for those with a linear frame of mind -the first collection or book if you will. We are introduced to the Sandman aka Dream, aka Morpheus, aka any one of countless names for the master of the dream world.

I know many realist readers are quaintly dismissing this read on account of the fantasy genre this seems to fit into, but before you leave let me say this: In many ways this story is more real than real, most of it is set in the world we know and breathe every waking hour of our dreary days. The rest of it is set in the world we wake up to when we fall asleep.

An ’Endless’ universe of our own creation.
