Slayer - Christ Illusion

Everybody knows what to expect from a Slayer album: energy, aggression, speed and a violent view of realty. Despite this predictability, or perhaps because of it, Slayer play this kind of music better than anyone Iíve ever heard.

What you have blasting out at you when you play Christ Illusion is the fastest Slayer album since 1986. It has the speed of Reign In Blood and the twists and time changes of Divine Intervention. In many ways, its like a combination of those two albums with some new elements tossed into the mix. For example, Jihad and Supremist have which riffs that, despite being fast and heavy, sound different from anything they have ever done. Yup, Slayer have dug deep for this one but have they dug deep enough?

Lyrically its basically the same old shit about murder, war, necrophilia with more emphasis on the anti-religious stuff. Many of the riffs are similar to other Slayer riffs especially on Cult, which sounds almost exactly like Ditto Head- from Divine Intervention. Nonetheless, there’s more good than bad. The only sings that don’t do much for me are Cult and Catatonic, which has a section that reminds me of Lamb Of God.

With this album, Slayer have done what it takes to stay on top of the metal scene for a while longer but I have no doubt that for the next one these guys are going to have to totally reinvent themselves or fade into obscurity.
