Let me start off stating that I admire Darren Aranofsky’s work. I think he is one of the best directors working today. The problem is that he has only made two movies so far and must still prove his longevity. His track record is admirable and the quality of his movies increase each time. Pi was is first major feature and is an astounding piece of work, though not perfect.

Pi is the story of Max, a mathematician on the verge of discovering a mathematical formula that will allow people to be able to predict the stock market. The problem is that he is being tracked by several different groups of people all wanting to take ownership of his ideas...and he is going insane. If he doesn’t get killed by greedy capitalists or a crazy kabalah sect he might become useless owing to his own minds collapse.

What makes Aronofsky such a brilliant director is that he places the viewer inside the mind of his characters. His camera work is so unique that one cannot help but be captivated. Pi is filmed in black and white, giving the film a conflicting realism/dreamlike quality. It takes one a few moments to figure out what is indeed real and what is merely a figment of Max’s imagination. This is the extent of his delusion. Everything is real to him whether it truly is or not. The pain that accompanies Max’s headaches is excruciating and the viewer is subjected to grating sound effects that makes you want to put a drill to your temple just to make it stop.

The narrative is a bit slow however. As a film student I can detach from the lack of story and just marvel in the technique, the average film goer will probably get a little bored early on. So if you are looking for insight into insanity give it a try. If you are looking for something simple and of random quality then give it a miss.
