How to go about planning and having your dream wedding dress designed.

So you have been living in sin for long enough, and have decided to jump the broom. How do you choose a wedding dress that conceals your tattoos (for the benefit of your elderly relatives), while still making you feel like your beautiful self?

Secret Garden corsetry have been helping our freaky friends tie the knot in alternative elegance for many years now, and have decided to share tips to designing your ideal dress.

Take yourself down to your nearest bridal boutique. They may not have your ideal dress, but they will have a wide selection of dresses for you to try on. The aim of this exercise is to discover what shape dress best suits your figure. Take your best friend(s) with you. They should give you an honest opinion.  Look out for the various silhouettes available like: Empire line (great for if you want to hide a tummy), A-line (very flattering for pear-shaped figures) or Fish-tail (looks great on girls with lovely bottoms). These are but a few of the very basic cuts on offer. Most Bridal boutiques allow you to bring your own bubbly, so the afternoon will prove to be quite…festive.

Once you have decided on your silhouette, get hold of a pile of magazines. Sit with your girlfriend and cut out images of all the dresses which you love. If there is a detail which really catches your eye, make a note of it. Alternatively, trawl the internet for beautiful dresses. There is many a beautiful design out there to inspire you.

Choose your colour pallet. The first white wedding dress was worn by Queen Victoria. She, being the queen of the British Empire, set a trend which has been hard to shake. Dresses were previously made in many colours, and while a black dress may cause your granny to pass out, you can most certainly get away with a silver dress, or even a red dress. Remember, you may dress your brides maids in any colour you choose, and I have seen some stunning wedding parties with the brides maids all in black.

The next step is to set your budget. In our experience, the area where you will spend up to two thirds of the total value of the dress is the fabric. You can choose to have your dress made up by the aunty who lives down the road, or if you are really ambitious you can try to create it yourself from a store-bought pattern.

Should you choose to have your dress designed and made by Secret Garden, would escort you on your fabric shopping spree and advise you every step of the way. We can create patterns to fit your figure based on your measurements. We would then create a mock up of your dress to make sure that the cut and fit are perfect before cutting and making up your dream dress.

Walking down the aisle on the day of your wedding need not be a surreal experience. Secret Garden aims to make it stress free and everything you could ever dream of.

Love,

Cathy and Lenka
